In case you missed our last post, we covered everything you need to know about yoga props – why they’re used, what they’re good for, and the four most common types. If you’re interested, you can read it here! This week, we’re going to dive into the most essential piece of yoga equipment – the mat. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the perfect mat for you. There are mats of different thicknesses, materials, and sizes that come with varying price tags, ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars. So, what’s the difference between a thick mat and a thin one? And, is it really worth investing in a $200 mat?
Yoga Mat Options to Consider
Thickness
One of the first things to consider when choosing a yoga mat is thickness. A thin mat, which is usually around 1/8 inch, is ideal for balancing postures. A thinner mat provides a stable and secure connection to the ground, allowing you to focus on maintaining your balance and form. With a stable foundation, you can improve your overall balance and stability in these types of poses, making them easier and more comfortable to perform. A thin mat is also lightweight and easy to carry, making it a great choice for yogis on the go and for travel.
A thicker mat, usually around 1/4 inch or more, provides a softer surface, which can be helpful for kneeling and sitting postures that put more pressure on your joints. A thicker mat can also provide additional cushioning for your hands and feet during standing postures. In styles like Yin and Restorative Yoga, a thick mat provides a soft foundation for holding poses for long periods of time. Ultimately, the choice of thickness will depend on your personal preferences and the type of yoga you practice. Some people prefer the stability of a thin mat, while others prefer the extra cushioning of a thicker mat.

Material
The two most common materials used for yoga mats are PVC and natural rubber. PVC mats are among the most popular because they are widespread and affordable. They are easy to clean, and come in a variety of colors and designs. However, PVC mats are not eco-friendly, and can also be slippery when wet, which can be particularly troublesome during heated yoga.
Natural rubber mats are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and provide excellent grip. They are also very durable and long-lasting, but they can be more expensive than PVC mats. Some natural rubber mats can have a strong rubber smell, which may be off-putting for some users.
Apart from PVC and natural rubber, there are several other materials used to make yoga mats, each with its unique set of benefits. Jute mats, for instance, are eco-friendly and provide a good grip, making them ideal for those who are looking for a mat that is both sustainable and functional. Hemp mats have gained popularity in recent years due to their durability and superior grip.
Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibers, which means that hemp mats can withstand heavy use and last longer than other materials. Cork mats are known for their natural antimicrobial properties; cork is naturally resistant to bacteria and germs, which means that it can be easier to keep your mat clean.
Size
Another consideration when choosing a yoga mat is size. A standard mat is 68 inches long and 24 inches wide, but there are other options available. It’s important to consider your height and your preferred style of yoga when choosing a size. If you are on the taller side or move around a lot on the mat, you might be more comfortable with a 70 or 72-inch mat. Mats also come wider than the standard two feet, which can be nice for poses like supine twists and even savasana. Consider also whether you plan to take your mat places, like on vacations or to a studio. A shorter mat is lighter and takes up less space.
Is it Worth it To Buy an Expensive Yoga Mat?
Buying a cheap yoga mat can be a tempting option for those looking to save money. However, yoga mats tend to be one of those things where you get what you pay for. I learned this lesson with the first yoga mat I ever bought at $12. Within just a few months of regular practice, pieces of the material began to flake off onto my clothes and body during practice. Cheap mats are often made with low-quality materials, which can lead to issues such as poor grip, lack of support, and a shorter lifespan. Cheaper mats are often not eco-friendly and can emit harmful chemicals.

Yoga mats that are more expensive tend to be of better quality than less expensive options. This is because higher-priced yoga mats are typically made with more durable materials and are designed to withstand the wear and tear of consistent use. Pricier yoga mats often come with things like extra cushioning or non-slip surfaces, which can help support your yoga practice and prevent injury. While it may be tempting to opt for a cheaper yoga mat, investing in a higher-quality mat can save money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Investing in a high-quality yoga mat is important for a comfortable and safe practice. A good yoga mat provides the right amount of cushioning, grip, and support, and can last for years. However, if the budget is tight, it’s better to use any yoga mat than to skip practice altogether. Even a basic or inexpensive mat can help prevent slipping and cushion joints during practice. It’s always better to make the most of available resources than to wait for the perfect situation. Over time, as your practice grows, so might your desire or opportunity for a better mat.
